Science Writer for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Publications

The CDM Group, Inc., seeks a science writer with experience producing content for digital media to join its Bethesda, MD team of behavioral health content experts, writers, editors, and communications specialists. Our collaborative team develops and promotes treatment manuals and related publications in an array of formats to educate behavioral health service providers, program administrators, and consumers about best practices. The position may be part-time or full-time depending on candidates’ credentials, experience, and availability.

The ideal writer will have experience in the science or health publications field, preferably in researching, drafting, and revising content related to mental health or substance abuse. The candidate must be able to:

  • Independently identify, review, and synthesize research from high-quality primary sources.
  • Write engaging, concise, well-structured content to convey actionable knowledge and foster changes in practice.
  • Adapt and streamline complex information for diverse target audiences.
  • Tailor content for a variety of formats: written publications, digital manuals, blogs, social media platforms, etc.

Familiarity with federal plain-language and style guidelines is strongly preferred, as is experience in marketing/promoting health-related content and in developing strategic communication plans for health programs.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in psychology, social work, communications, or adjacent field of study.
  • 3+ years’ experience writing science/health content for diverse publication types (e.g., print and web-based).
  • Strong writing skills, including a talent for making scientific and technical content accessible to lay audiences.
  • Ability to analyze, critique, and synthesize research literature with guidance from content experts.
  • Skill to perform thorough substantive editing in response to reviewer feedback under tight deadlines.
  • Collaborative skills—can engage with a team of in-house staff and external consultants in the development of consensus-based publications under the guidance of the Expert Content Director and Project Director.
  • High degree of proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially MS Word (including use of Styles).
Desirable Qualifications
  • Terminal degree in psychology, social work, communications, or adjacent field of study.
  • Clinical training or administrative experience in the mental health or addictions field.
  • Significant body of published work in the mental health, addictions, or public health field.
  • A history of writing and editing content on prevention and treatment of substance abuse and/or mental illness.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based/best practices in the substance abuse and/or mental health services.
  • Familiarity with addiction and/or mental illness recovery communities and movements.
  • Experience developing promotional plans and marketing messages for health publications.
  • Knowledge of APA and GPO style guides and federal plain language requirements
  • Ability to develop and maintain in-house style guides and content production schedules.
  • Experience writing or managing development of proposals.
